From what Thom Hogan ( http://www.bythom.com/nikon.htm ) says you get the best results shooting in nuetral mode, with no in camera enhancements, with contrast settings docked a tad bit. He goes on to say that Nikons have a tendency to shoot oversaturated and with too high of contrast.
So lately I have been shooting by his recommendations and seen a slight increase in detail. I suppose if you shoot in RAW at full neutral and then add in all of the adjustments you want, carefully, in Photoshop, things should come out better.
